Bout Recap: Minnesota Nice Takes Out the Lunachix, 186-146

(BALLWIN, MO) In front of their A-team sistren - and the faithful 'Aqua Army' that followed them in their 560-mile trek - the Minnesota RollerGirls B-Squad notch a 186-146 victory over the Arch Rival Roller Girls' Saint Lunachix Saturday night in a B-team match-up at Midwest Sport Hockey.
Paced by an explosive second period, the 40-point road win in front of 450 raucous fans improved the B-Squad's record to 2-0.
Propelled by Frigid O'Shaughnessy 's 14-point strike in the second jam, MNRG sprinted out to a 20-0 lead three jams into the bout.
Then after a scoreless jam, ARRG's Molecular Mayhem concocted an 18-point strike, whittling the B-Squad's lead to 20-18 with 23:40 left in the period.
Both teams traded five-pointers on the next two rotations to push the score to 25-23.
Minnesota gained a power jam via a track cut in jam eight and Slamda Phage collected a 19-3 jam, which extended the B-Squad's lead to 44-26 with 17:30 left in the period.
The Saint Lunachix responded with a 52-2 run that covered the next seven jams. ARRGâ's Morgan LeFaetal's 14-point strike was followed by nine points from IDA the Living Dead, resulting in a 49-44 scoreboard flip in favor of St. Louis with 13:55 left in the frame.
A 2-1 jam for MNRG in jam 11 was followed by a four-pointer from Chix co-captain Pink Diamond that extended ARRG's lead to 54-46.
Following a scoreless jam in jam 13, Mayhem's power jam with 8:45 left netted 10 points, widening ARRG's advantage to 64-46. IDA followed with a 14-pointer to conclude the ARRG run and give the St. Louisans a 78-46 lead with 6:45 left.
The B-Squad notched back-to-back four-pointers from Phage and Rhea Volt, but IDA added 10 in jam 18 as the Chix maintained an 88-54 lead with 3:40 left in the period.
MNRG went on a 13-0 run to finish the first period. Nine from O'Shaughnessy with 1:31 left was supplemented by a first period ending four-pointer from Phage.
At intermission, ARRG sported an 88-67 advantage, but the B-Squad was primed to explode.
As they had in the first period, Minnesota started strong to start the second period. This time, however, the pressure was relentless. It resulted in a 56-5 rumble in the period's first five jams.
Volt's period-opening 20-5 jam whittled the Chix lead to 93-87. Phage followed with a five-pointer to make the bout a one-point affair, 93-92. O'Shaughnessy's 10-pointer at 24:45 resulted in a 102-93 scoreboard flip in favor of MNRG.
Meanwhile, the MNRG blocking battalion kept the pressure on. The B-Squad's Moto Fluzzi, Soft Serve, Wolfe Bite, Shiver Me Kimbers, MeshugEnough and a host of others kept ARRG scoreless for a seven-minute stretch.
After Volt notched a pair of points in jam four, Phage collected a 19-pointer to finish the streak and stretched the B-Squads lead to 123-93.
Momentum shifted back to the Lunachix as they went on a 27-0 run over the next four jams. After IDA notched a 19-pointer in jam six that whittled the MNRG lead to 123-112, Tupac Shank-Her and IDA posted back-to-back four-pointers to make the bout a three-point nail biter, a 123-120 B-Squad lead with 17:50 left.
MNRG regained the momentum and scored 22 points straight. A pair of points from Fannie Tanner was followed by a 15-pointer from Phage to push the score to 140-120 with 13:00 left. O'Shaughnessy added five to complete the run and extend MNRG's lead to 145-120 with 11:05 remaining.
ARRG's Mayhem notched nine in jam 13 to whittle the gap to 145-129, but Minnesota thwarted a comeback with a 25-0 run over the next four jams. Punctuated by Phage's 10-pointer with 6:00 left, the B-Squad pulled ahead 170-129 and never looked back.
MNRG outscored the Saint Lunachix 119-58 in the second period to pick up the 186-146 victory.
Phage led B-Squad scoring with 81 points, followed by Volt's 48.
IDA the Living Dead paced Lunachix scoring with 83 points, followed by Mayhem's 41.
Following the bout, team MVPs were selected for both squads by their opponents. For MNRG, Phage and Buzz TightRear were selected MVP blocker and jammer, respectively. Shank-her and IDA were selected as MVP blocker and jammer, respectively, for the Saint Lunachix, who dropped to 7-4.
